What is Keyword Research?
Keyword research is arguably the most important part of the entire SEO process. If your keyword research is not done properly, then all of your on-site optimization and off-site backlink building will prove useless.
Keyword research is the process of determing which keywords you would like to have your website rank for in the search engine results pages (SERPs). This is generally a time consuming and meticulous process as you want to choose the right keywords for your website.
What exactly are the "right keywords" ? The right keywords are keywords that both show promise in the amount of monthly search volume they can bring your site, and are targeted to your audience. And above all else, you need to evaluate your competiiton to see if targeting said keywords are even reasonable to pursue to begin with.
How Keyword Research Works
Keyword research begins like many things with a simple brainstorming session.
You have to consider specific questions:
- "What are my customers looking for?"
- "What type of services and/or products do we provide?"
At this point you must gather together basic information about your company and decide which phrases your target audience may be seeking through search.
Next, you must plug in your chosen phrases into one of multiple keyword research tools that exist. The most commonly used tool at a basic level is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.
When you plug your chosen keywords into a keyword detection tool, the tool will likely display certain results for you to review. These results include among many other fields; the monthly search volume your keywords receive (if any) as well as suggested other keywords that are similar to your brainstormed keywords that your customers might be looking for.
Once a list of keywords is acquired this way, the next step is to evaluate the competition that appears in the SERPs for these keywords. There are many factors involved in determing whether or not your competition can be defeated or not.
