Avoiding the Wrong Types of Links with Panda

3:59pmGMT

Bad Backlinks

It seems like ever since Google's recent Panda algorithm update everyone has been talking about what links NOT to build instead of the usual topic of "what's working now."

Google laid the smack down on private blog and PR networks with their latest update. But that is not the only thing they changed.  Here are some guidelines for your future link building campaigns and how to avoid any type of punishment.

Don't Over Do Anchor Texts

This is probably a painful realization for many of you.  As SEO's, our entire being before these updates was to make sure you stuffed as many keyword loaded anchortexts into your backlinks as possible.  But this is no longer the case.  Many of the angry messages that Google sent to webmasters was a result of people over-stuffing anchortexts with exact...

Another Google Update

Yet another algorithm update was put into effect by Google recently as they have decided that page layouts are now an important factor in whether or not your website is a good match for their traffic.  The general concept behind this change is that Google was getting too much feedback from users complaining that when they go to a certain website, they were having difficulties finding the actual content of the site, because the site was just so overloaded with banner ads.

This is an experience that I can say I have experienced several times while searching for information online, even though I consider myself to be incredibly internet savvy and aware of what pretty much any type of website is just at first glance.  The official article on the subject can be read here at Google’s webmaster blog.

Google says that the...

Choosing the Right Websites to Build Links On

10:16pmGMT

Getting Backlinks

There are many different ways to get backlinks to your site.  Generally speaking you should always rely on getting as many free links as possible.  Google tends to frown upon paid link networks, or anyone trying to sell links.  The concept here is that information should be free, and if that information is solid and reliable then it should be posted on an important web2.0 property or other website on the internet where people can access it freely from online communities or search.

Whenever you create contextual links make sure to always use the highest quality content possible.  One you put together excellent content you can submit that content to directories, press releases, blog comments, forum posts, and many other places.  One of the most reliable and powerful places to get links from however are web2.0 sites.

Web2.0 Sites

Web2.0 links have been around for many years.  There was a time when if you...

How Will SEO Be Different in 2012?

5:02pmGMT

Modern Age SEO

As search engines, and technology in general, become more sophisticated, it is important to remain 5 steps ahead in your search engine optimization efforts. Thin content and spammy looking links are no longer going to cut it if you have a project that you expect to run for a long period of time. If Google had its way, they would slaughter SEO. In reality, it is no longer SEO vs. Google. You need to be able to give The Big G what that want these days if you plan on seeing rankings that are worth anything. Involve the following areas in your optimization strategy in order to stay relevant.

Local SEO

Try to optimize your sites locally and globally. You want to be able to rank your website locally, even if it is not for a local business. The macro niches and keywords are pretty much as saturated as they can be at this point. So, you either have to put on your boxing gloves and fight corporate America for broad rankings OR you can focus on micro...

You know your website provides a ton of value to the world and you want to share it with just about anyone that you can. However, you have noticed that you are not ranking on the first page of the SERPs for ANY of the keywords you are targeting. What gives? How to wield social media in order to drive your site up in SERP rankings.

2:23pmGMT

Many people believe that the social aspect of SEO is only for huge sites that target highly competitive terms and have huge link building budgets. This is simply not true. Everyone can use social media in their SEO efforts, even if you think your keyword or niche isn’t social worthy. Here is one tactic you can use to bring social into your life.

Content

Start off by consistently creating amazing content for your site. People are blind to regurgitated nonsense that constantly gets thrown around by lazy marketers. Find something new to write about, or at least put a truly unique spin on something that has been done before. Provide data that backs up your statements in the form of pictures, videos, graphs, or whatever else seems relevant. Make sure your data is detailed enough to convey your point while not putting your reader to sleep. This all seems life very obvious stuff, but it’s apparent that many people are oblivious to it or are just plain lazy....

Google Places Should Never Be Overlooked in the SEO Game

Google Places Pages: It’s in the details!

If you are like any of the local businesses trying to drive traffic to your business and gain new clients, then you probably have a Google Places Page. Google Places gives any business owner their own little corner on Google to advertise and let people know about their business. It acts as part business directory, part photo blog, and part review site.

The real benefit of Google Places is that Places Pages often get displayed before any of the other organic search results. This means that you can have a front page Google listing simply because of your location and your industry! What many people don’t understand is that these Places Pages are ranked by more than just location. Google Places uses an entirely different algorithm than Google Search, which has created a headache for all SEOs worldwide.

The truth is that it really is all in the details. A Places Page that is jam packed with...
